Treating Thyroid Disease
According to the American Thyroid Association, approximately 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease. It is also seen that women are five to eight times more likely to develop thyroid problems than men.
The thyroid gland located, located in the front part of the neck, produces hormones that help regulate numerous metabolic processes throughout the body and affects body functions like energy level and heart rate. - Hyperthyroidism is another form of thyroid diseases in which the thyroid gland produces excess hormones. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include unexplained weight loss, muscle weakness, vision problems, disturbed sleep, and nervousness.
The doctor can diagnose hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism by checking the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the blood. It is a chemical that triggers hormone production in the thyroid. In the case of hypothyroidism, higher quantities of TSH are circulated in the blood, whereas in hyperthyroidism, TSH levels are found to be below the normal level.
Treatment for Thyroid Diseases
Apart from the medications, your diet is an essential factor, especially in the case of hypothyroidism as people tend to gain weight. Here are some ways to naturally treat hypothyroidism through changes in your diet. Eating specific foods won’t help you control hypothyroidism, but a well-balanced diet can make you feel better and ward it off.
Fish
Salmon and sardines are the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for hormone balance and thyroid function. Omega-3 can help reduce inflammation and boost the immune system.
Coconut oil
The fatty acids present in coconut oil help support healthy metabolism, improve immunity and brain function, and fight fatigue. The antioxidant and antibacterial properties of coconut oil help to reduce inflammation.
Fiber Foods
People suffering from hypothyroidism should consume 30-40 grams of fiber on a daily basis. Some of the best sources of fiber are vegetables, lentils, beans, etc. Fiber will not only help digestive health but also improve cardiac health and help in healthy weight management as it makes you feel full.
Fresh fruits and vegetables
Try to incorporate as many fruits and vegetables into your daily diet as they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These help in reducing inflammation and support healthy heart and healthy weight.
Other foods
Try to include sprouted seeds like flax and chia seeds as they are good sources of omega-3 and help in hormonal balance and thyroid function. Yogurt can also help reduce inflammation and nutritional deficiencies.
Hence, when it comes to the treatment of thyroid disease, medication and some changes in diet plan can be effective to keep the hormones under control.
