Symptoms of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Of the two most common types of lung cancer, this is one where the healthy cells grow uncontrollably to form tumors. Non-small cell lung cancer occupies 85% of the recorded cases.
It is essential that the condition is medically diagnosed before making conclusions based on the symptoms. The treatment can be started only after conclusive tests are done. However, it is best to stay aware of the signs that might lead to this type of cancer.
Here are few symptoms of non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC).
-
Coughing
A cough is a fairly common condition. It can be a result of any small infection or even smoking. But, if it does not go away after medication and gets worse over time, it can be a symptom of NSCLC. If you are coughing blood, it is a definitive sign of this type of cancer.
-
Weight Loss
If there is sudden weight loss when there is no change in the diet or exercise regime, then it might be a sign of NSCLC. There might be many other health conditions that cause the same too.
-
Fatigue
Cancer can make you tired and weak. Everyday activities will seem like a huge task. There can even be a loss of appetite that leads to the weight loss that was mentioned above. This does not mean that the cancer has spread all over. It can be a sign of non-small cell lung cancer.
-
Neurological Symptoms
Cancer is a disease that spreads to other parts of the body too. It’s the same case with non-small cell lung cancer. It is more susceptible to affecting the brain and causing neurological problems. The signs include random headaches and seizures.
-
Clubbed fingers/toes
This is a condition that is common in heart and lung cancer patients. This happens because the blood flow to the fingers and toes have increased. Intestinal disease and chronic lung infection can also cause this condition. It’s best not to ignore when you notice clubbing in your hands or feet. Consult a specialist to diagnose it.
-
Paraneoplastic Syndrome
This is a condition that is an early warning sign of NSCLC. It is often mistaken for other conditions. This syndrome arises when substances similar to hormones enter the bloodstream due to lung cancer. They can cause problems in any part of the body. It causes high calcium levels which can lead to unexpected growth in the bones and blood clots.
-
Other Symptoms
There are several more signs that can be a symptom of NSCLC. These include chest pain, trouble in breathing, and wheezing. You can also face difficulty in swallowing food and water. There might be a difference in the tone or sound of the voice too. Fever and irregular heartbeat are the other possible warning signs of non-small cell lung cancer.
These symptoms of non-small cell lung cancer should not be ignored. These symptoms can even be a result of other health conditions. However, it’s best to leave the diagnosis to medical experts. If you experience any of these symptoms and signs, consult a doctor.
