Beauty Don’ts for Women with Eczema
There’s little wonder why many women with eczema swear off makeup for ever. However, just because you have eczema doesn’t mean you can’t wear beauty products—you just have to be careful in selecting makeup that’s dermologically-tested and made with natural ingredients that don’t irritate your skin. It’s always wise to get a blessing from your dermatologist as well (hint, hint).
Follow these beauty tips to promote healthy, glowing, moisturized skin with fewer eczema flare ups:
- Always start with a spot test
Before slathering a new moisturizing cream all over your face, it’s vital to conduct a test on a very tiny area of skin to test the reaction. Spot test all beauty products on a small patch of skin and wait for a few hours. Also seek out dermatologist-approved products and moisturizers known for their hypoallergenic, natural, skin hydrating benefits.
- Look for natural moisturizers
Eczema flare ups are typically caused by lack of moisture so it makes sense that products that boast non-toxic, naturally moisturizing benefits are your ally. Look for ingredients like lanolin, shea butter, and glycerin for moisturization; products with hyaluronic acid for its penetrating yet anti-inflammatory abilities; and niacin (or Vitamin B3), which is known for encouraging new epidermal and dermal cell growth.
- Wave your fragrance free flag
Fragrances often lead to eczema flare ups because they’re harsh on the skin. Instead, seek out fragrance free cosmetics. Luckily, most natural organic and hypoallergenic beauty products are also scent free.
- Avoid harsh acids and preservatives
Of course, there’s a longer list of makeup ingredients you should avoid if you have eczema, but major flare up triggers include harsh acids (i.e., glycolic acid, retinol, salicylic acid) that dry out the skin, as well as harsh preservatives (i.e., methylparaben or butylparaben) added to extend the life of cosmetics.
